Education cooperation deepens between Queensland and Qatar
A consortium of three Queensland universities — University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, and Griffith University — has signed a framework agreement with Qatar Foundation to expand research collaboration and student exchange programmes.
Agreement scope
The five-year framework covers:
- Joint research projects in renewable energy, water desalination, and public health
- Student exchange with 50 places per year in each direction
- Faculty secondments to Qatar Foundation's Education City campus
- Industry placement for Qatari students in Australian mining, energy, and healthcare companies
Qatar Foundation and Education City
Qatar Foundation operates Education City — a 14 sq km campus hosting branch campuses of eight world-class universities including Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, and Northwestern. The Foundation is seeking to expand its partnership network with Asia-Pacific institutions.
Why Queensland?
Queensland's universities have particular strengths in:
- Mining and resources engineering (UQ ranks top-10 globally)
- Health and tropical medicine (relevant to Qatar's healthcare expansion)
- Environmental science and sustainability (aligned with Qatar's National Vision 2030)
- Sports science (QUT's sports technology is used in Olympic programmes)
