Australia's LNG expertise meets Qatar's mega-expansion
Qatar's North Field Expansion (NFE) project — the single largest LNG development in history — is creating significant opportunities for Australian companies with expertise across the gas value chain.
The US$30 billion NFE project will increase Qatar's LNG production capacity from 77 million to 126 million tonnes per annum by 2027, cementing Qatar's position as the world's largest LNG exporter.
Where Australian companies fit
Australia is the world's second-largest LNG exporter and has developed deep expertise across the sector:
- Engineering and project management: Australian firms have delivered LNG projects from Gorgon to Ichthys
- HSE (Health, Safety, Environment): Australian safety standards are recognised globally as best practice
- Environmental management: Emissions monitoring, carbon capture readiness, and marine impact assessment
- Workforce training: Competency-based training programmes for LNG operations and maintenance
Trade relationship context
Australia-Qatar bilateral trade was valued at A$1.4 billion in 2025. Qatar is Australia's 4th-largest LNG competitor but also a significant customer for Australian agricultural products, education services, and professional services.
FIFA World Cup 2022 legacy
Qatar's successful delivery of the 2022 FIFA World Cup demonstrated the Kingdom's capacity for mega-project delivery. The legacy infrastructure — including stadiums, metro, and hospitality facilities — continues to drive demand for facility management, sports technology, and event services.
Chamber engagement
The Australia & Qatar Business Chamber is organising a dedicated energy sector mission to Doha in Q4 2026. GROW members and above will receive priority access to government and QatarEnergy introductions.
